Putting Sibling Relationships on the Map
A Multi-Disciplinary Perspective
Edited by Martina Klett-Davies
The Family and Parenting Institute was set up as the National Family and Parenting Institute (NFPI) in 1999 to be a centre of expertise on family and parenting issues, to influence policy and change the environment in which we raise the next generation.
We have been known as the Family and Parenting Institute since November 2006, when we shortened our name and improved our communications to strengthen our impact.
Since 1999 we have:
- carried out major research projects mapping the 'state of the family' and family support services
- produced publications, events and practical resources for practitioners
- campaigned and lobbied on behalf of parents and families
- provided information and advice to parents and those who work with them through websites, publications, media work and campaigns
Much of what we have argued for since 1999 is now part of the political mainstream:
- We advocated family friendly society and this is now supported across the political spectrum.
- We argued for support to parents through parent information sessions in schools and a menu of parenting services; there has been a step change in government commitment to parenting support.
- We have argued for severe curbs on advertising to children; now more and more politicians and organisations support this.
- We advocated involving parents in the political process and in designing the services they are offered and now parents are regularly involved in consultations on policy and services.
