Managing Debt

If you are in debt, it's important not to panic about your problems, but also not to ignore them. Citizens Advice Bureaux (CABs) and the National Debtline offer free, confidential advice. Make a list of your debts, income and weekly spending so they can help you make savings.

  • Don't ignore letters from creditors – inform them that you are having problems. The CAB or National Debtline can help you do this.
  • Don't borrow money to repay your debts – think of ways to increase your income, such as working extra hours or claiming your full entitlement of benefits.
  • Do discuss your money problems with your partner. They can't help if they don't know.
