The UK's Most Vulnerable Families

The Parenting Fund – a successful legacy

One of the largest and most successful schemes ever to support UK parenting drew to a close in spring 2011 – and it’s time to celebrate its legacy.

Between March 2004 and March 2011, the Family and Parenting Institute managed the Parenting Fund on behalf of successive UK governments.

The Parenting Fund provided support to a web of grassroots organisations across the country who, in turn, supported the most vulnerable families in their communities. The families helped were experiencing problems including intergenerational unemployment, relationships marked by conflict, drink and drug abuse, and frequent contact with the police.

The Parenting Fund:

- disbursed over £40 million in grants to 354 charities and ‘not for profit’ organisations

- provided services that support work with parent’s families and children in 23 priority local authority areas.

- provided direct support to 220,851 parents and 91,471 children through the projects that it assisted

In January and February 2011, the Family and Parenting Institute carried out a survey of managers of grassroots organisations supported by the Parenting Fund.

When asked their opinion of the statement that the Parenting Fund has ‘improved the lives of parents and their families in the Local Authority where my project is based,’ 78 per cent replied that they ‘strongly agree.’ A further 20 per cent replied that they ‘agree.’

When asked whether ‘FPI, as the managing body for the Parenting Fund, has delivered the Fund effectively,’ 91 per cent replied either ‘strongly agree’ or ‘agree’.
