Putting Sibling Relationships on the Map: a multi-disciplinary perspective
Wednesday, 30 April 200870 academics and practitioners attended to hear the wide range of research perspectives on offer.
The Family and Parenting Institute's Chief Executive, Mary MacLeod, opened the event highlighting that, outside of clinical studies, little attention has been given to the relationships between brothers and sisters. Instead the focus has concentrated on parent-child relationships.
The event included presentations from Dr Samantha Punch from the University of Stirling whose research on birth order revealed that contrary to popular belief the middle child does not feel hard done by, rather they revel in their position of being able to be a younger or older child when it suits them.
Professor Judy Dunn spoke about the relationships between brothers and sisters across their life span, discussing that when people are older their relationship with their siblings really matters, with many of their conversations about their brothers and sisters reflecting back on childhood.
Debbie Jones, Corporate Director for Children and Learning at Luton Borough Council talked about their approach in working with the whole family – not just the individual.
Professor Julia Brannen chaired the event. The other speakers were Professor Rosalind Edwards from the London South Bank University, Professor Margaret Rustin from the University of East London and Dr Miri Song from the University of Kent.
A publication which brings together all of the research and presentations from this event will be available later this year.
